Readings has launched a new collection of Vintage Classics at irresistible prices!
If you’re meandering through 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, (or even if you’re not) it’s a very useful collection. Classics includes both 19th century and 20th century ones with a few Aussie titles here and there.
If you’re a Readings Member you can browse the collection, select the ones you want and send the link to let your loved ones know which books you want for birthdays and Xmas. (Subtle, yeah!)
I won’t get to the ones I chose for a while but it’s nice to add them to the TBR:
Life A User’s Manual by Georges Perec
Mason & Dixon, and V by Thomas Pynchon
Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood
The Collector and The Magus by John Fowles
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
Click the Readings link above if you can’t resist ‘em either!

I’m curious to read your review about this Murakami.

I’ve never read anything by Murakami – I had planned to read Kafka on the Shore this year but I might read this one first now, because it was written before the Kafka one…

I have read Kafka on the Shore and I liked it. (no review, it was before I started blogging)
Max from Pechorin’s Journal recommended South of the Border, West of the Sun and it was wonderful and part of my top 10 for 2010. (review available)
I abandoned The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles. (review avalaible too)
So of course, for your first Murakami, among the two you have, I would recommend Kafka on the Shore.

Good list – I particularly liked “Goodbye to Berlin” and “Invisible Cities” and always like Murakami although haven’t read “The Wind-UP Bird Chronicles” yet. I was just checking on the audiobook version of it last night, but after finding out the audio version was 25 hours, I bypassed it.

25 hours! That’s more than The Savage Detectives!

Oh, The Savage Detectives! I attempted to read that book hearing such great things about Roberto Bolano, but gave up after about 140 pages. It just seemed terribly repetitious to me.

It was indeed repetitious. It was probably a better experience as an audio book because I was able to drift along with it, not minding too much if things were repeated because I kept losing focus anyway!

There are some wonderful books on the webpage. I’ve read quite a few of them but nowhere near enough.

Invisible Cities! I read it last year and adored it. Invisible Cities is one of those books you wish would never end. Hope you like it!
I’ve read about George Perec’s Life: A User’s Manual, but haven’t managed to find time to read it yet. It sounds amazing.

I know nothing about either of them except they’re on the 1001 Books You Must Read List. So I reckon they’ll be good fun :)
