Well, now we know we’re really in the 21st century!
Tonight Rohan Wilson was awarded the 2011 Vogel prize for his novel The Roving Party – and not only can you download the first chapter to read from here but you can also buy it as an eBook right now, this very minute from Readings eBook store.
If you want the book, you have to wait until tomorrow!

Sounds like a good read. I’m glad the Vogel has now moved to printing the thing at the same time as the announcement – I think it makes sooo much more sense.

Me too, what every new writer needs is publicity, and before, all the publicity of the win died down before the book hit the shelves.
But o! what torture, to know you’d won and not be allowed to tell anyone!

Oh, I couldn’t do it. Not even a little bit.
What impresses me more is that they must have printed thousands of the buggers to send them out, and the title didn’t leak. Kudos, A&U.

I know this isn’t the right place for it (you might have a better one), but I thought you would like to know that a novel which I would call a New Zealand novel — Elizabeth Catton’s The Rehearsal has won this year’s Canadian First Novel Award. Catton was both in Canada but raised in New Zealand (and wrote the novel while at university there). She is a young (mid-twenties) upcoming star — I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My review is here: http://kevinfromcanada.wordpress.com/2011/03/02/the-rehearsal-by-eleanor-catton/ . I am sure we will be reading her in the future from the promise of this first book.
