Yes, I know, ANZ LitLovers is the last place you’d expect to find a review of a computer textbook.
MacUsers, stop reading now. (I used to have a Mac, and I quite liked it, but the days when it was an infinitely superior product are long gone, and anyway, I like to run the same systems at home as I do at work, it’s much more productive than constantly having to switch between different ways of working).
Anyway…
Now, trust me, even if you are reasonably competent with Windows, if you’ve just bought a new computer, it is going to have Windows 8 installed, and so this book – or something like it – is essential. Windows 8 is more like a SmartPhone but it doesn’t always play the way you expect it to, and when you are flummoxed, you need this book.
That’s because although the computer comes with a guide to Windows 8 preinstalled to walk you through the changes – if you somehow accidentally escape the screen, you can’t get it back. (Well, I haven’t been able to find it again *sigh*).
Laptops is written for a beginner, so it includes a whole lot of stuff about, yes, laptops, but most of the book is about how Windows 8 works. I would be lost without it. The instructions are very clear, and the index and chapter layouts are first class.
Highly recommended.

Nice review, Lisa :) Sorry to know about the Windows 8 pre-installed guide which you are not able to find again. Hope you are able to get it back. Thanks for telling us about this book. It looks quite useful.

Downloaded this book from Kindle, and am now starting to fathom Windows 8. I found the system anything but intuitive and very frustrating. Thanks for the review – in among keep warm and reading for fun, just the thing for wet weekend!
