I had a flat tyre waiting for me when I tried to leave work this afternoon, so I’m late with the news: the Miles Franklin Award longlist has been announced. There’s a couple I haven’t come across but I’m delighted with the inclusion of the ones I’ve read and reviewed:
- Tracy Farr, The Life and Loves of Lena Gaunt, Fremantle Press, see my review and find out more about Tracy at Meet a Kiwi Author
- Richard Flanagan, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Vintage Australia, see my review and a Sensational Snippet
- Ashley Hay, The Railwayman’s Wife, Allen & Unwin, see my review, and a Sensational Snippet
- Melissa Lucashenko, Mullumbimby, UQP,see my review
- Fiona McFarlane, The Night Guest, Hamish Hamilton, see my review
- Nicolas Rothwell, Belomor, Text Publishing, see my review
- Trevor Shearston, Game, Allen & Unwin, see my review
- Cory Taylor, My Beautiful Enemy, Text Publishing, see my review
- Tim Winton, Eyrie,Hamish Hamilton, on my TBR
- Alexis Wright, The Swan Book, Giramondo, see my review
- Evie Wyld, All the Birds, Singing Vintage Australia, (see Sue’s review at Whispering Gums)
Congratulations to all the authors, editors and publishers!
Happy reading, everyone!
Nice list, Lisa. I love the title ‘My Beautiful Enemy’. Nice to see Tim Winton’s book on the list. Will he win his fifth Miles Franklin? Would love forward to hearing your thoughts on it :) Happy reading!

*chuckle* Now, Vishy, don’t tease, you know I’m not really a fan of Tim Winton. (Except for Cloudstreet). I’ll read Eyrie if it gets onto the shortlist. Otherwise it will join all my other pristine first editions of Winton’s novels, which LOL I plan to sell in my old age to boost my retirement fund.
But as to the others, I’m torn. There are some fine works of literature on this list and I’m hard pressed to choose between the ones I really love.

Sorry to hear about your flat tire Lisa, it’s always annoying. It’s an interesting list. I’ve heard of most of them, but haven’t actually read any. I did go to a launch of Game as much of it is set in Forbes, about Ben Hall.

Ben Hall was my first childhood crush, so I guess I’d better get on with reading Game. I was planning to borrow Belomor from the library this week, having read about it on Patrick Allington’s Miles Franklin predictions, but now I guess it’ll be on reserve for the next six months!

Does your library have much in the way of Australian books, Stu?
