2018 ALS Gold Medal shortlist

ASAL (the Association for the Study of Australian Literature has tweeted the shortlist for the 2018 Gold Medal today.  Some very good books have been omitted, but it was a strong longlist so I suppose that was inevitable.

A Long Way from Home, by Peter Carey (Penguin), see my review

The Agonist by Shastra Deo (UQP), see Tony’s review at Messenger’s Booker

The Last Garden by Eva Hornung (Text), see my review

The Choke, by Sofie Laguna (Sue at Whispering Gums has just reviewed this)

Hinterland, by Steven Lang (UQP), see my review

Border Districts, by Gerald Murnane (Giramondo),  see my review

I’m glad I don’t have to choose between these.  Congratulations to all the authors, editors and publishers!

  1. I’m really keen to read the new Peter Carey, so nice to see it on this list.

  2. I am interested in the Peter Carey book but don’t own it. I did win a copy of the Choke and it lies on my shelves unread. I need to pull it down and have a look. TBR lists are so long.

    • Nope, I’m not reading The Choke. I am sick of these dysfunctional family stories that are so flavour-of-the-month at the moment.

  3. A strong looking list, I agree. I have Peter Carey next to my computer here, but when will I get to it. And, I’d love to read the others too.

  4. Wish I had the strength to rip into reading another shortlist but for whatever reason, the Stella exhausted me this year (and I still haven’t started Tracker!). I’m free-range reading for a few weeks.

      • Since finishing the Stella (except Tracker!) I’ve done a couple of re-reads, short stories and a couple of novellas.
