1001 Books…

This is a record of my reading from 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die 1001-books1

There are endless new editions of this list:  each new edition drops some titles in order to make room for more recent books.   I am using the 2001 Edition not the revised ones.

My list is based on the original 1001 List (from 1001 Books You  Must Read Before You Die 2001 ) but you can also download an Excel worksheet to track your progress from here.  Be warned, the new worksheet is based on the revised 1001 list and it’s very different. I have read 24% of the old list, but only 21% of the new, and there are far fewer classics on the new list.  There are, of course, no books after the year 2005 on the list I have chosen.

I have revamped this page because it was becoming too hard to keep track.  What follows is the 1001 books titles in alphabetical order, and ticked to show which ones I’ve read), and then my progress, in alphabetical order by author so far.

Thanks to Sue from Whispering Gums for tips on how to do the hyperlinks on this page:)

Progress so far

Date are accurate after 1997 when I started keeping a reading journal. For others they are approximate:

  • For comparatively recent books that I read before keeping reading journals, I have put the date that I read it as circa the year after publication, because I usually got hold of a copy of high profile books when they became available in paperback or at the library.
  • Others, I have been able to date because I read them at school or university, or they are linked with some memorable event in my life.
  • In some years, I read everything I could find by a particular author.
  • Some were childhood books, or books I read as an adolescent.
