Thanks to everyone who is participating in Indigenous Literature Week 2014 at ANZ Litlovers – I love hosting this celebration of indigenous writing!
ILW 2014 takes place to coincide with NAIDOC Week 2014 (July 6 – 13) but I will be monitoring this page until the end of July.
You are welcome to add your review/s early.

Thanks Jenny, I really must apologise for the delay in responding, I have $80 of Telstra 4G plugin internet time but I can hardly ever connect with it! I think we must be in a black spot here where my parents live in Burleigh Waters. The timing of this trip to Qld couldn’t be worse :(

It’s a wonderful book, isn’t it? I read it a couple of years ago and loved the way Winch was able to capture that young voice in the narrative. Thanks for participating Marilyn, I really value your support:)

You are amazing, I was exhausted just reading your tweets:)
Now that I’ve read your review, I realise that Dark Emu is a book of such significance, it’s a phenomenal cultural shift in our thinking about prior ownership of this land.
BTW on the question of Aboriginal house-building, it was just yesterday when I was researching for my new unit of work about indigenous war service, that I found a report about Aboriginal heritage issues in the Lake Cowal area (where there was at least two massacres aka ‘punitive raids’, one of which killed the entire family of Private WJ Punch – he was the sole survivor, found trying to suckle from his dead mother). The report (a sober, dry document in bureaucratise, prepared in the context of a mining application) mentions evidence of Aborigines building substantial housing – yet still the myth of insubstantial ‘humpies’ persists.
So well done you for spreading the word with your review, I will be using this information in my school’s Aboriginal Perspectives curriculum:)
