I’m very pleased to see via Perry Middlemiss that three books I’ve admired have been shortlisted for the 2011 Barbara Jefferis Award.
Each year the announcement coincides nicely with International Women’s Day because the Barbara Jefferis Award is presented to ‘the best novel written by an Australian author that depicts women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empowers the status of women and girls in society’. Small independent publishers and debut authors feature in the shortlist.
The shortlist
- Like Being a Wife by debut author Catherine Harris (Random House/Vintage) see my review
- Indelible Ink by Fiona McGregor (Scribe), see my review
- Come Inside by debut author G.L. (Glenis) Osborne (Clouds of Magellan) see my review
- The Good Daughter by Honey Brown (Penguin Books/Viking)
- Sustenance by Simone Lazaroo (UWA Publishing/UWAP)
Shortlisted titles for this award rarely disappoint so I shall be seeking out copies of the ones I haven’t read yet.
The winner will be announced on next month on April 9th.
Last year’s winner was The China Garden by Kristina Olsson in 2010, see my review.

It’s a fairly new award, Stu. It was only created in 2007 from the bequest of John Hinde, and it commemorates his wife, the author Barbara Jefferis who died in 2004.
